Many weird coincidences in that past few days have raised concern over the operation of democratic institutions in the country; from the legally questionable television licensing to the targeting of journalists and interventions in justice. The recent removal of prosecutor Dogiakos from the Judicial Disciplinary Board a few days before the elections and at the request of the Justice Minister has raised questions.

After that came a raid in the office of the wife of the governor of the Bank of Greece, as part of the corruption investigation into KEELPNO. Obviously nobody is above the law, however the fashion and timing of the investigation raise questions. More so when many SYRIZA officers have attempted to target Mr. Stournaras, when the Attica Bank case remains unresolved and is constantly covered by prominent government officers.

This chain of events comes in conjunction with the obvious attempt to control critical institutions with interventions that are more akin to regimented practices from another time. The media, justice, independent authorities and education are constantly targeted by SYRIZA ministers and officers who are either to undermine them or control them with questionable procedures and appointments.

These are clear indications of the statist perceptions that are endemic in the Left. Before we are faced with extreme cases and a national schism, it is time of the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to put an end to these beliefs. Before he and the country as a whole pay dearly…
