The Mayor of Athens Giorgos Kaminis met with the caretaker Alternate Minister of Migration Policy Yannis Mouzalas at the Ministry of Interior in order to discuss the possibilities regarding new refugee hospitality centers, in order to maintain the ‘temporary nature’ of the recently-established center in Eleonas.
Mr. Kaminis informed the Alt. Minister that the dramatic refugee situation is beginning to expand to many areas in the city center, with refugees propping up tents on squares in Victoria and Agios Nikolaos. While repeating his claim that the camp in Eleonas in temporary, the mayor argued that abandoned barracks could be used to address the needs.
According to the mayor, the Alt. Minister was in agreement that unless local communities consent and agree to cooperate on addressing the refugee crisis, there can be no long-term policy. Mr. Kaminis cited the camp in Eleonas as an example of cooperation with local communities.
