A 14-year-old boy has been accused of staging his own kidnapping, with the assistance of a 17-year-old and 18-year-old, in order to extract money from his parents. The police department in Lamia was informed of the teenager’s “kidnapping” on the 22nd of May, when the 14-year-old was allegedly forced into a van, as he was heading to private tutoring.

When the mother was informed by the private tutor that the 14-year-old did not show up, she called his mobile phone, with one of the “kidnappers” answering and demanding 12,000 euros for his release. A police operation was launched in the area shortly after and about two hours later the 14-year-old was released, without any random being collected.

The police investigation carried on and discovered the overall plan to extract money from the 14-year-old’s parents. The 18-year-old accomplice also turned in the 14-year-old’s mobile phone. All three youths were brought to police department of Lamia, where they admitted the fake kidnapping and now face attempted blackmail charges, while the 14-year-old also faces a perjury charge.
