The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, expressed his support for the government in Athens, in statements he made during his trip in South American countries.

The Pope argued that that past Greek governments bear the responsibility for accumulating the huge debt and praised the new government for initiating a review. He then argued that if companies can get bankruptcy protection, then so should countries. “If a company can declare bankruptcy, why can’t a country do so and we go to the aid of others” he asked.

When asked about Greece’s financial situation, before the deal was announced Monday, the Catholic Church leader commented that “it would be too simple to say that the fault is only on one side”. The Pope expressed his hope that a solution would be found to solve the Greek problem and that actions be taken so that no other country faces the same problem.

The Pope added that he is “allergic to the economy”, since his father – who was an accountant – would bring work and his accounting books at home over the weekends, whenever he did not manage to finish at the factory.
