Prominent New Democracy officers appear to be cautious or even negative towards participating in an ecumenical, national unity government, under the present circumstances. The party’s provisional president Evangelos Meimarakis is staying out of the debate to see the developments in SYRIZA, which may turn out to be unpredictable.

Mr. Meimarakis was also approached at the European Peoples’ Party conference last Sunday in Brussels and appeared reserved at Monday’s informal political council meeting. The main opposition party is geared towards voting for the prerequisite measures, in order to secure the agreement with the creditors, however the final decision will be taken at the parliamentary group meeting that is scheduled for Tuesday.

At least 8 New Democracy were opposed to the measures that were passed in Parliament on Friday, but were convinced at the last moment to support the Prime Minister’s initiative in order to bring the agreement. As such, the PG meeting will provide the opportunity to debate any differences and objections, so that New Democracy’s approach in parliament is unanimous.
