The president of the main opposition party Antonis Samaras was received by President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Sunday, in order to discuss the dramatic developments, following the government’s decision to carry out a referendum next week.

Upon arriving at the President’s office, Mr. Samaras underlined that defending the country’s position in the heart of Europe was a “national red line” and claimed that Greece’s position in Europe is “in an immediate danger”.

President Pavlopoulos responded that he appreciates Mr. Samaras’ initiative and noted that the country’s course in Europe and Eurozone must remain undisturbed. This, he added, can only be achieved by common effort, which is more necessary than ever.

Furthermore, the President noted that he trusts that the Greek people will be mature and decisive next Sunday.

While there have been calls from the opposition , particularly New Democracy, for the President to refuse to ratify the Parliament’s decision for a referendum, it is believed that the relevant decree will be issued later on Sunday afternoon.
