The upcoming Euro Summit scheduled for Monday, where the Greek situation will be discussed at the highest political level, is deemed to be a positive development in an effort to reach an agreement, by the government in Athens.
In the statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office, it is stressed that the goal is to come to an agreement, based on EU rules and democracy, which will allow Greece to return to growth within the euro. The statement further notes that anyone investing in the crisis and fear will be disappointed.
The upcoming Euro Summit for Greece on Monday was announced on Thursday evening, as the Eurogroup in Luxembourg concluded without an agreement being reached. Although Jeroen Dijsselbloem did not rule out an agreement being reached soon, he stressed that time was running out. The IMF’s Christine Lagarde urged for further discussion, while warning of a default, should Greece miss its loan payments.
In the press conference that followed the Eurogroup, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis argued that Greece presented a comprehensive proposal, which if accepted would put an end to the drama. He stressed that it is the time for European leaders to come up with a solution and noted that “we are dangerously closed to a mentality which accepts an accident”.
