The Evangelismos hospital is facing serious financial problems, with the available funding estimated to cover basic needs and functions until the end of July. Without any emergency funding, the hospital’s operation is under threat. Monthly operating costs are about 7.5 to 8 million euros, with the hospital down to 10% of its budget.

According to hospital sources, the hospital has not received additional funding to cover the healthcare needs of uninsured patients. At present there are about 300 patients without insurance, whose healthcare costs amount to about 750,000 euros per month. The president of the hospital’s employee union and director of Cardiology Clinic Ilias Sioras told To Vima that all governments, including the present one, have observed “catastrophic policies” that have caused the dramatic situation.

Many other hospitals have also been experiencing similar problems and have report shortage in many essential items, from disposable sheets to the necessary materials for urine cultures. Doctors and hospital employees have warned the Ministry of Health that unless orders are placed now, the hospitals will also face a shortage on essential medicine in September.
