The leader of the main opposition Antonis Samaras has rejected the prospect of early general elections, instead favoring a national consensus, which he argued was “the only path for the country”.
According to the New Democracy leader, early elections would be carried out in “wild and disadvantageous” conditions, which would leave Greece in a worse state than at present. He also accused SYRIZA of planning a return to the drachma.
Earlier, Mr. Samaras had estimated that it would be difficult for the SYRIZA-led coalition government to come to an agreement with the country’s creditors and that an agreement would be “especially painful”.
