The Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has arranged a short visit to Berlin on Tuesday the 23rd of September, where he will meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel. Mr. Samaras will be highlighting the economic progress and primary surplus in search for German support in the upcoming talks regarding the sustainability of Greece’s public debt.

With European leaders beginning to dispute the German policy of strict austerity, Mr. Samaras will not be making any absurd demands, but he will request tangible support, as Greece has implemented a lot of what has been agreed, while paying a heavy social and financial cost. The financial developments affect the political situation, so an improvement can potentially affect the upcoming presidential elections.

While Mr. Samaras will focus on presenting the great efforts, sacrifices and fiscal consolidation that have taken place during the huge recession, the German side appears skeptical and doubtful of the reforms, which have lagged. Nevertheless, the meeting will give the Greek Prime Minister the opportunity to gauge Germany’s intentions in light of the upcoming debt sustainability talks with the troika.
