The union of EOPYY doctors has decided to extend its strike until next Tuesday, the 3rd of December, in reaction to the Ministry of Health’s dismissal plans. The doctors and administrative employees are holding a protest outside the Ministry of Health.

Earlier, the doctors cancelled a 1pm meeting with Minister Adonis Georgiadis and decided to escalate their strike actions on the 28th to 29th November and 2nd to 3rd of December.

The EOPYY president Dimitris Kontos explained that the meeting was cancelled because the Ministry “categorically and provocatively repeated the government intention to dismiss thousands of doctors, despite the efforts to deceptively misrepresent the dismissals as 8-month suspensions”. The Minister of Health, who responded that he was “always open to dialog”, claimed that “no plans have yet been finalized”.

EOPYY’s health workers are also joining the strike, making the conditions at EOPYY’s clinics difficult for patients. The nationwide medical association PIS has also called its members to prepare to mobilize and fight “against the catastrophic plans that aim to weaken public structures, including EOPYY’s primary care and hospital care”.
