President Papoulias will be in Thessaloniki for the celebrations of the 28th of October and the liberation of the city as well as the celebrations for the city’s patron St. Dimitrios.

On Saturday President Papoulias will be accompanied by government Vice President Evangelos Venizelos at the St. Dimitrios church, which Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will also attend. The event for the celebration of the 101st anniversary of the city’s liberation will be held at the Ceremony Room of the University of Thessaloniki at 6.30 in the afternoon. The university’s Rector Yannis Mylopoulos will make an address.

At 11am on Sunday Mr. Papoulias is scheduled to inaugurate the exhibition entitled “This is how we fought in 1940” which has been organized by the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace. The exhibition features pictures and artifacts from the battles in Albania, Macedonia, Thrace and Crete. The student parade will commence at the same time.

The military parade on Monday, which will see the return of armed vehicles, will begin at 11am. The Minister of National Defense Dimitris Avramopoulos will represent the government. Security measures are expected to be especially high and about 3,000 police officers are expected to be deployed.
