The Municipal Theater of Piraeus is reopening today after 14 years and according to artistic director Takis Tzamargias the theater’s goal is “to plot a contemporary and creative course, worthy of all the big European theaters”. The President Karolos Papoulias and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will be present at the grand reopening ceremony.

The neoclassical building designed by 19th century architect Ioannis Lazarimos which houses the theater shut down 14 years to undergo extensive restorations. Some of the most revered Greek actors such as Dimitris Horn, Elli Lambeti, Marika Kotopouli and Manos Katrakis graced the theater’s stage in its 118 year history.

The Theater will celebrate its reopening with a stage performance of Fokas Evangelinos’ “Streets of Piraeus” play, which will see actors such as Yannis Bezos, Dimitris Lignadis, Yannis Zouganelis, Eleni Kokkidou and Kerasia Samara supported by the Hellenic Navy’s band, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Piraeus and Youth Choir of he Terpsithea Conservatory.

The second day will see soprano Gina Fotinopoulou perform well-know opera arias, with support from tenor Yannis Christopoulos and pianist Manolis Papasifakis. A photography exhibition of the theater by Maria Koukou will also be on display throughout the reopening events.
