There was a lot of tension this morning at the PASOK Youth conference taking place at the SEF basketball stadium in Piraeus. Doors remain closed, with conference-goers unable to be certified to enter.
Up until last night, it appeared that the two candidates for the position of secretary, P. Christidis and A. Spyropoulos, agreed that the party’s national council would decide upon the new position, after the party conference. The deal was confirmed, according to a meeting between outgoing secretary Pantazis and party leader Venizelos.
Today however, Mr. Pantazis and the group supporting Mr. Christidis demanded that the secretary be voted in at the youth party by the end of the night, or for a national youth council to be voted in emergency procedure, to chose a secretary tomorrow morning before the party conference begins.
Mr. Venizelos appears to be infuriated by the development and has instructed his associates already attending the conference to proceed with the secretary election as originally agreed upon. Both sides are negotiating.
