ELSTAT announced on Thursday that retail sales, excluding fuel and motor lubricants, were down by 11.8% in 2012 while t the same time the turnover was down by 11.3% due to the recent cuts in wages and enduring recession that has even affected basic consumer goods. Including fuel and lubricants, retail was reduced by 12.2% and turnover by 11%.

The huge drops in retail sales noted at food stores (9%), supermarkets (7%) and shopping malls (4.7%) are indicative of the fall in consumer demand.
