The former President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Stephanopoulos passed away on Sunday evening, at the age of 90 years old. The former President had been hospitalized on Thursday due to serious respiratory infection.

After completing his studies in Law, he joined Konstantinos Karamanlis’ ERE party and later New Demcoracy. Following the restoration of Democracy in Greece, Stephanopoulos served as Minister of Interior, as Minister for Social Services and as Minister for the Presidency.

Following disagreements, Stephanopoulos left New Democracy and established the Democratic Renewal party (“DI.ANA”) in 1985. Stephanopoulos later served two consecutive terms as President, from 1995 to 2005 and was succeeded by Karolos Papoulias.

Known for his low-key profile, Stephanopoulos adopted a unifying approach to domestic and international affairs affecting Greece and was a popular public div in the country during his presidency.
