The River has reacted intensely to allegations that the Coast Guard numbers migrants, as they arrive on the Greek islands, in order to help identify them. The River denounced the “shameful and unacceptable” practice, noting that it was “last used in concentration camps”.

Furthermore, the opposition party called the government to identify those who are directly responsible for this “degrading practice” and bring them to justice.

The allegations also prompted a response from the Hellenic League for Human Rights which commented that this “incomprehensible practice” creates the impression that these methods are “profoundly and cynically revived” in modern Greece and called the government to demonstrate its respect of the Constitutionally-provided, fundamental right of human dignity.
