The police announced the arrest of a 50-year-old woman for embezzling an estimated 170,000 euros from the funds of the Chronic Disease Hospital in Drama. The 50-year-old woman, who is also the hospital’s treasurer, has confessed to her crime.

According to local reports, the 50-year-old woman appears to have told the police that she is addicted to gambling. The police have allowed her bail and are investigating the possible implication of further people.

This is the second recent case of embezzlement at the Chronic Disease Hospital, as about a year ago another employ was found to have stolen about 40,000 euros from the hospital fund. The employ was replaced with the 50-year-old woman, who was arrested on the same charges.

The president of the Social Welfare Center of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Marina Filippidou commented that after last year’s case of embezzlement, the hospital’s finances have been under close watch.

After noticing that a significant shortfall in the hospital’s fund, the treasurer initially told Mrs. Filippidou that the money had been stolen. However, after the police investigation showed that the hospital safe had not been tampered with, the 50-year-old confessed.
