The Coast Guard reported that it was involved in a speed boat chase in the Psalidi maritime area off Kos, during which the captain of the speed boat lost his life. The deceased man is believed to have been a Turkish trafficker.

According to the official report, the Coast Guard located the speedboat after it was spotted offloading seven refugees on the Psalidi beach on Kos. The chase started as soon as the speedboat ignored the coast guard’s calls.

During the chase the speed boat tried to ram the coast guard vessel four times, with the coast guard officers responding with warning shots and fired towards the speedboat’s engine. It appears that a bullet may have ricocheted, killing the speedboat’s captain.

The deceased’s body has been taken to Kos for an autopsy.
