The nationwide federation of port employees OMYLE and the union of permanent and cadet port officers of the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP) are preparing to go on strike today in response to the government’s plans to privatize the country’s ports.

The port employees announced a walk-out between 7am and 11am today, with a demonstration scheduled for 8.30am outside the central offices of the Piraeus Port Authority. On Tuesday the privatization of the Thessaloniki Port Authority (OLTH) will be discussed at 5pm, with the port employees arranging a 24-hour strike for the day and a 4pm rally at Klafthmonos Square, followed by a march to Parliament.

On Wednesday the port employees will participate in the 24-hour general strike organized by GSEE, with the OLP employees rallying outside the Municipal Theater of Piraeus at 10.30am and marching to the OLP offices.

The federation has reacted against the government plans to privatize the country’s port, with OMYLE stressing that this will have “painful consequences for employees, local communities and critical sectors of the economy, such as tourism, shipping, trade and transports”. The federation also claims that the discussions in Parliament are going to “a parody, just like in the case of OLP”.
