Thousands of taxpayers rushed to pay what they owed for the 2012 emergency, luxury, road and income taxes on the final deadline, on the 31st of December. The Ministry of Finances was rather pleased with the budgetary injection in public finances; however thousands of taxpayers are in for a shock.

When checking their Taxisnet profile, many taxpayers discovered that they still appeared to have debts, despite having paid everything on time. The best case scenario is that they have to worry about the possibility of a late fine or losing a settlement, while in the worse case, they will be unable to get a tax clearance certificate due to… unpaid bills.

Additionally the system is struggling to process taxpayers who have multiple active debt settlements and attempt to pay their debts via bank transfer. Only the first transaction appears to be paid off, while subsequent ones appear late.

The Ministry of Finances is aware of the problems, while the General Secretary of Public Revenue Haris Theoharis is reassuring that no taxpayers will lose out on a settlement if they had paid, no late fines will be imposed and the problems will be solved in the next few days.

Until the technical problems have been addressed though, any taxpayers needing to issue tax clearance certificates must do so the old fashioned way of queuing up at their local tax office.
