The prosecutor of Karpenisi has brought felony charges of fraud against former prefect governor of Evrytania and current MP with New Democracy Kostas Kontogeorgos, along with other members of the prefect council during the 2002-2010 period.

The fraud charges came about during the investigation in how the Prefecture of Evrytania appeared as guarantor for a 4.7 million euro loan from the Deposits and Loan Fund. After stating their plea, the courts decided to impose a 60,000 euro bail on Mr. Kontogeorgos and disallowed the other 18 prefect council members to leave the country.

The investigation is being handled by the Inspector of Public Administration and Financial Inspectors from the Ministry of Finances. During the investigation it was revealed that “Evrytania S.A.”, the company which took out the 4.7 million euro loan with the Prefecture of Evrytania acting as guarantor, was attached to a number of “phantom” companies and never paid back any of loans installments. The Prefecture has since been absorbed by the District of Central Greece, which is now liable for loan.

Mr. Kontogeorgos appeared on Skai TV this morning and denied all charges against him, claiming that he is completely innocent. Additionally Mr. Kontogeorgos stated that he is not considering resigning from his position as MP or from New Democracy, but admitted that none of the loan installments were paid back.
