The Ministry of Shipping has announced that it will abolish amateur fishing licenses for owners of “leisure boat”. The goal is to allow tourists who have rented a boat for their vacation in Greece to be able to fish without having to apply for a license at port authorities.

According to the relevant legislation “leisure boats” are defined as sail-power or engine-operated craft over 7 meters in length. The Minister of Shipping Miltiadis Varvitsiotis has announced that further changes, such as renewing licenses every four or five years rather than the current two years currently mandated, will be introduced in order to reduce bureaucracy and free-up port authority staff.
