The former Minister of Finances and National Defense Yannos Papantoniou will face misdemeanor charges for tax evasion of 3 million euros. Mr. Papantoniou’s wife Stavroula Kourakou will also face felony charges for 1.33 million euros found in a Swiss bank account belonging to her.

The charges against PASOK’s veteran former minister and his wife will come as a result of the relevant investigation conducted by the Financial and Economic Crime Unit (SDOE). Curiously the former Minister and his wife will not face money laundering charges.

According to the investigation Mr. Papantoniou appears to have been concealing up to 80,000 euros a year, according to the data available through the illustrious Lagarde List.

The ongoing investigation will also examine the former Minister’s involvement in armament deals during his tenure as Minister of National Defense. So far foreign authorities have provided SDOE with valuable information on other implicated parties.

It should be noted that if Mr. Papantoniou and Mrs. Kourakou pay their debts, the charges against them will be dropped.
