The appeal launched by former Mayor of Thessaloniki Vasilis Papageorgopoulos was postponed and will be examined by the courts on the 16th of January 2014. The delay is unrelated to the case itself and attributed to a Bar Association dispute regarding lawyer attendance.
Mr. Papageorgopoulos was sentenced to life imprisonment for the embezzlement of about 18 million euros from municipal funds, along with former general secretary Michalis Lemousias and former treasurer Panagiotis Saxonis.
The former mayor of Thessaloniki, who urged the courts to examine his appeal as soon as possible, has maintained his innocence and claimed that embezzlement of municipal funds occurred before his first term.
