The Ministry of Finances has been chasing up all sources of taxes in an effort to secure the much-touted primary surplus. To that effect the Ministry’s services are focusing on cases where the statute of limitations is going to lapse at the end of the year.

The Deputy Minister of Finances Giorgos Mavraganis explained in a memo that the government is focusing on cases where the statute of limitation is about to lapse and cases that it can hope to collect taxes and outstanding debts.

A law was passed that extended the statute of limitations by a year for cases that were to expire on the 31st of December 2012. This means that there are only a few months left to perform inspections and impose fines, otherwise the State will be unable to make any requests.

Mr. Mavraganis reassured Parliament however that if an order for investigation in such a case has been issued, then the statute of limitations is automatically extended by a further two years.
