The marathon debate in Parliament concluded with a vote shortly after 9am on Friday, where the bailout agreement reached with Greece’s international creditors was approved. In total 222 MPs supported the agreement, 64 voted against it and 11 abstained from the vote.

While the bailout agreement went through, the government suffered major loses and had to rely on opposition votes. SYRIZA in particular suffered 43 MP losses (32 voted “No” and 11 abstained), with the government now counting on less than 120 MPs. Surprisingly, SYRIZA MP and Parliament VP Alexis Mitropoulos decided to abstain from the vote.

Government to request vote of confidence after 20 August

Following the conclusion of the marathon session in Parliament, a number of media outlets cited government sources suggesting that the government would request a vote of confidence after the 20th of August, when the procedures with the institutions are expected to have concluded.

Government and opposition MPs clash over third bailout agreement

During the long discussion that preceded the critical vote, government and opposition MPs frequently clashed on the bailout agreement and the procedures observed in Parliament.

The discussion opened with a delay, after the President of Parliament Zoi Konstantopoulou formally requested a ten-hour debate – meaning that it last until 2pm on Friday. According to an earlier decision the parliamentary discussion was to end at 3am on Friday, followed by a vote.
