The VAT on beef may soon increase from 13% to 23% as an alternative to the controversial 23% VAT in private education, while the government is also considering raising the tax on tobacco products and alcoholic beverages.

A report in Ta Nea notes that the government’s financial staff recognizes that the revenue estimates from taxing private education were perhaps overstated.

Even if the government were to apply the 23% VAT on private education, the measure would only bring about 40 to 45 million euros at best, when the measure was expected to generate 400 to 450 million euros.
