Shortly before Friday’s critical Eurogroup begins, the American government has urged European leaders and the Greek government to carry out mutual concessions in the negotiations for the loan agreement extensions.

A high-ranking official at the U.S. Department of the Treasury reported that Europe and Athens have been pressured into coming to an agreement to secure Greece’s funding and warned of a “return of uncertainty” in the Eurozone in case of a failure.

The official further stressed that the agreement is important not just for Europe, but for the global economy as well and underlined that mutual compromises were necessary. The official added that “the Europeans” are able to manage “these challenges”, but refused to further elaborate.

According to the official, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Jacob Lew spoke with high-ranking European officials on Thursday.
