With less than one week remaining until the critical elections on Sunday the 25th of January, the main opposition party SYRIZA has increased its lead over the governing New Democracy, while the battle for the third place is heating up, according to the survey conducted by Kapa Research for To Vima.

When asked which party they intend to vote for on Sunday, the respondents answered as follows:

  • SYRIZA – 31.2%
  • New Democracy – 28.1%
  • The River – 5.4%
  • PASOK – 5%
  • KKE – 4.9%
  • Golden Dawn – 4.7%
  • Independent Greeks – 2.7%
  • Movement of Socialists Democrats – 2.7%
  • Other party 3.6%
  • Blank – 2.1%
  • Undecided – 9.6%

Irrespectively of which party they intend to vote for on Sunday, 72.7% believe that SYRIA will win the elections, compared to 18.9% who believe that New Democracy will come first. The survey shows that the voters favor a “national unity” government (61%) above all, followed by a coalition between ND, PASOK and the River (36.1%) and an independent SYRIZA government (35.6%).

The voters are also split as to which party should be in charge of a coalition government to tackle the serious problems that lie ahead, with 40.6% supporting SYRIZA’s lead, compared with 40.9% who support New Democracy being at the helm.

While New Democracy’s Antonis Samaras (42.6%) continues to have an edge over SYRIZA’s Alexis Tsipras (37.3%), when asked who is a more suitable Prime Minister, the difference has shrunk. Furthermore, the voters seem to be equally troubled by the financial program of SYRIZA (42%) and New Democracy (40.1%).

Nevertheless, 86% of respondents argued that the general elections on the 25th of January are going to be very critical for the country’s future, compared to 12.4% who believe otherwise.
