A traffic accident near a chapel of the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos claimed the life of a monk and resulted in the injury of two firefighters on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred at about 8am, when the fire brigade sent a vehicle on its daily patrol on Mount Athos. Due to the bad condition of the roads though the truck lost control of the vehicle and went off a cliff, injuring the two firefighters on board.

Upon being informed of the accident, the monk took his own car and headed towards the site, presumably to assist in the location of the two firefighters. Tragically, the monk also lost control of his car (about 100 meters away from the first accident) and also fell 60 to 70 meters off the cliff.

The Fire Brigade’s Regional Director of Central Macedonia reported that the poor road conditions resulted in the two accidents. The two firefighters were airlifted to the 424 General Military Hospital of Thessaloniki, while the monk was pronounced dead.
