Late on Friday, the courts ruled that the DEI employee strike was illegal and abusive, on the basis that the employee union had not allocated the necessary security staff.

Following this turn of events, the government announced that it was a civil mobilization was to begin, with DEI employees receiving back-to-work orders. Employees who refuse to comply with these orders may face redundancy and up to three months imprisonment.

GENOP DEI’s board of directors is to convene on Sunday in order to decide upon their response to the government’s mobilization. Former union leader Nikos Fotopoulos has urged the striking employees to “tear up” the orders and escalate the conflict, illustrating the tension amongst unionists.
