The Greek ambassador in Kiev Vasilis Papadopoulos reported that the Greek expatriates in Ukraine are safe, as there were no incidents reported in Mariupol and Odessa, where the largest Greek communities are based. About 150,000 Greeks are reported to live in Ukraine.

Mr. Papadopoulos explained on SKAI TV that the Greeks are not in any danger “but they feel a bit weird with the opposition’s dominance”, since they live in areas where the recently-ousted president Victor Yanukovych was popular.

The ambassador also addressed concerns about the abolition of a 2012 law regarding languages used by minorities (including Russian, Romanian and Hungarian) and explained that this only affects the use of Greek in the Ukrainian administration.
