The city of Athens will host the farmer union protest today at noon, with farmer from all over the country congregating at Vathi Square to demonstrate against the government’s taxation policy and in demand of lower production costs. The farmers will also be joined by employees from other sectors.

Buses with farmers from all over Greece are en route to the nation’s capital for today’s demonstration, which is widely considered the next step in the farmer protest, with more demonstrations and actions expected to follow.

The president of the federation of farmer unions of Larissa Maroudas Rizos estimated that participation in the protest will be much greater than last year, with representatives expected to come from Macedonia, Central Greece, Thessaly and Crete. Mr. Rizos stated that there are about 40 farmer road blocks set up all over Greece.

The federation of the farmer unions of Arta issued a statement calling for their colleagues to join them in their struggle and support the efforts, which they have hinted will continue after today’s nationwide demonstration.
