The disgraced and recently-expelled from New Democracy former Minister of Transport Michalis Liapis has found himself in more trouble, as it was revealed that he is involved in a housing restoration scandal.

Mr. Liapis, who is currently on vacation in Bulgaria, appears to have fraudulently collected an EU subsidy to convert a country villa in Karpenisi into a guest house, but instead used the funds for home improvements.

The former Minister has denied the allegations and claims that the villa operated as a hotel and guest house for ten years, in accordance with the EU subsidy’s terms and conditions, before being turned into a private summer home again.

Furthermore, the Municipality of Karpenisi ordered an emergency inspection of Mr. Liapis’ villa and found that the former Minister fraudulently declared that the building was 70m3 rather than 233 m3, in order to save 250 euros annually on electricity bills.
