The European Commission has approved an investment of 29.5 million euros by the Regional Development Fund for the modernization of the ticket issuing system and the introduction of “smart tickets” for urban transport in Athens.

According to the approved plan, the plastic credit-card sized “smart” tickets will replace the current paper-based tickets. Travelers will add credit to their smart tickets, which will be subtracted each time the card is used in the Metro, tram and bus services. The Regional Development Fund will also provide funds for the installation of equipment for ticket inspection and passenger crossing.

The European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn reported that the investment is an important project that will improve urban transport and the quality of services for tourists, commuters and the residents of Athens.
