Greek basketball and the AEK sports club mourn the loss of veteran Giorgos Amerikanos, who passed away in the early hours of Monday at the age of 71.
Giorgos Amerikanos is widely considered one of Greece’s greatest basketball players, having participated in AEK B.C.’s 1968 European Cup win, which resulted in a huge surge of basketball’s popularity in Greece.
Amerikanos played for the national team 68 times between 1960 and 1969 and was Greece’s top scorer at the 1961 and 1965 EuroBasket tournaments.
The veteran player faced serious health problems over the past three years, after a stroke and had been rushed to the hospital earlier in September, following another stroke.
