Government vice president Venizelos and Italian Prime Minister Leta have agreed to begin negotiations for establishing an EEZ and other marine zones between Greece and Italy.

According to a report from Ta Nea, the ultimate goal of Athens and Rome is to highlight the Mediterranean and maritime perspectives of the European south. The two countries agreed to carry out with a mutual agenda in their European presidencies.

Diplomatic sources suggest that after yesterday’s agreement, teams of experts will begin negotiations in order to expand upon the current Greek-Italian agreement from 1977, in order to include the EEZ and other types of marine zones.

It is not yet known how Albania will respond to the agreement, since an agreement with Italy delineating the continental shelf between the two countries has been cancelled by an agreement establishing maritime borders with Greece in 2009.
