Greece’s 1-0 victory against Latvia last night at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus was a decisive step towards qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Fernando Santos’ side showed its teeth early on in the game and had many opportunities to score goals with Samaras, Salpingidis and Mitroglou unable to capitalize on their performance.

Salvation came for Greece in the second half, at the 58th minute in the game, thanks to Salpingidis . Latvia tried to fight back, but they were not match for the Greek defense. Latvian defender Rugins and Greek midfielder Katsouranis were sent off with red cards.

With two qualifying games left in October (with Slovakia and Lichtenstein), Greece has few chances of finishing at the top of the group and qualify directly to the World Cup in Brazil. With Greece tied in first place with Bosnia and Herzegovina, a tie-breaker seems a very likely scenario.
