The Ministry of Growth is under pressure from the troika to gradually ease restrictions on the auctioning of primary residences. The Deputy Minister Athanasios Skordas claimed that his ministry is working on setting up social criteria, to come into effect in 2014.

Mr. Skordas spoke to Mega Channel’s morning chat show and explained that such criteria would be the employment and marital status of the tax-payers, as well as the value of the residence itself.

In 2008 the government imposed a temporary ban on primary residence auctions, which has been renewed every year. Sources from the Ministry of Growth revealed that the government has not yet come to a decision and intends to discuss the matter.

The estimations on the number of primary residences that could be up for auction vary greatly. The latest divs suggest one in five loans is not serviceable and as a result as many as 200,000 homes could be at risk.
