1.2.13
The Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change Evangelos Livieratos has announced that the Surveillance Network for Atmospheric Pollution will be upgraded and expanded with five new measurement positions. The new measures will help monitor the unusually high concentrations of health-endangering smog particles.
At the same time standards are to be established regarding solid biomass fuel for non-industrial use (such as pellets and woodchips). Central solid biomass boilers will also go under compulsory tests to acquire a certification. The purpose is to ensure efficiency and monitor fume emissions, as well as deal with dangerous fuels and heating appliances.
The ministry is currently examining the offers it accepted last week for the mapping of atmospheric pollution. The mapping will detail the types of emissions related to activities, giving the ministry the opportunity to intervene effectively where is needed.
Additional tests and measurements will allow the ministry to determine the participation of natural sources from distant location on the concentration of airborne particles, such as Saharan dust and sea salt.
