The prevailing belief amongst the leading divs in the main opposition party New Democracy is that the political developments to follow the referendum on Sunday will herald the beginning of the end of the Alexis Tsipras government. Many ND officers believe that the Greek people will vote in favor of an agreement with the institutions.

Party president Antonis Samaras, who called the Prime Minister to not carry out the referendum on Sunday and resume negotiations, will address New Democracy’s Parliamentary Group at 3:30 on Monday, where his party MPs will also take the stand and stress the need to remain on a European path. Former Prime Minister and party leader Kostas Karamanlis is also expected to take initiatives in this direction, following his statement on Saturday, when he spoke of “foolish choices” that put the country at risk.

Meanwhile, a growing number of ND MPs are concerned over the belief that voting “Yes” on Sunday’s referendum will trigger a collapse of the government. In this case, they argue, the Prime Minister will be unable to support a policy that is contrary to his proclamations and will have to resign. As such, preparations are being made in order to be prepared for all possibilities.

Should the Greek people however against the proposal submitted by the Institutions, many in New Democracy believe that Greece will be forced out of the Eurozone, which in turn will trigger dramatic political developments that will force the Prime Minister to resign.
