A police officer and a foreign national were reportedly arrested on Friday for illegal retention, attempted extortion and unprovoked bodily harm. The arrest of the police officer has prompted the authorities t further investigate the participation of other officers in an extortion ring.
The State Minister for Combating Corruption Panagiotis Nikoloudis, who announced the arrest, has been working with the police’s Internal Affairs agency to dismantle the extortion ring. Further arrests of corrupt officers are expected over the next few days.
It appears that the group of corrupt police officers supported an extortion ring, by providing cover and assistance to carry out illegal activities in the city center of Athens.
