The failure to elect a President in Parliament today will result in a rather tense election campaign in January, as the divide between SYRIZA and New Democracy appears to close, according to a Kapa Research survey.

When asked which party they would vote for in the upcoming elections, the respondents answered:

  • SYRIZA – 27.2%
  • New Democracy 24.7%
  • PASOK – 6.1%
  • KKE – 5.8%
  • The River – 5.8%
  • Golden Dawn – 5.5%
  • Independent Greeks – 2.5%
  • Other party – 4%
  • Blank vote – 2.8%
  • Undecided – 15.6%

The Haikalis bribery scandal has had a significant impact on the Independent Greeks, with only 34% believing there was some merit to his accusations, compared to 56.8% who believe otherwise.

New Democracy’s Antonis Samaras (44.1%) is regarded as a more suitable Prime Minister than main opposition leader Alexis Tsipras (34.4%), while survey respondents appear to be split on the type of government to emerge from snap elections: 44.4% favor a alliance based around New Democracy, while 37.3% favor a SYRIZA-based alliance and 18.3% are undecided.

Polls have consistently shown the main opposition party in the lead over New Democracy, however it appears that the recent financial developments have caused concern amongst the electorate. When asked about the Greek economy, 77.9% of respondents noted that they were concerned about future developments, compared to 21.9% who responded that they were not.
