The Ministry of Health has decided upon the new profit margins for pharmacies and wholesalers of pharmaceutical products, thus completing one of the necessary prior actions set by the troika.

According to the Ministry’s decision, which was published in the government gazette, the new gross profit margin for non-prescription medication and for prescription medication not covered by social security is up to 35% of retail price. For medication covered by social security, the mark up ranges from 2.25% to 30%.

In the case of wholesalers, the mark up for non-prescription medication is 7.8% on the producer’s highest net price, 5.4% for prescription medication not covered by social security, 4.9% for medication covered by social security bodies (up to a value of 200 euros) and 1.5% for all medication covered by social security and above the value of 200 euros.
