The European Commission has approved a 34 million euro fund to be dispensed from the European Regional Development Fund in order to expand the tram line in Piraeus.

The tram network is to be expanded from Neo Faliro to Piraeus, with 13 new stops on the 5.35 kilometers of new tracks. The project, which began in January 2013 and is set to be complete by the end of 2015, will result in the creation of 169 permanent job posts.

Commissioner Johannes Hahn commented that the expansion project is a good example of how regional development funds can help Greece recover and prompt growth. Mr. Hahn added that the new line will improve transport and make the city of Piraeus more enticing to international developers and investors.
