The 78-year-old representative of Germans arms company Wegmann Dimitris Papachristos was arrested yesterday over the recent armament scandal to surface and was given until Friday to state his plea before the courts.

According to Mr. Papachristos’ attorneys, the 78-year-old has vowed to assist in the investigation to the best of knowledge, while pointing out the many health problems he suffers from, including amnesia.

Papachristos was implicated in the armament scandal by the former deputy director of armaments at the Ministry of National Defense Antonis Kantas.

In his testimony Kantas claims that he was given a 750,000 euro bribe for the purchase of 24 self-propelled PZH2000 cannons. This armament deal was signed in July 2001, during Akis Tsohatzopoulos’ tenure as Minister of National Defense and cost a total of 195,709,774 euros.

Aside from Papachristos, Kantas has also implicated P. Efstathiou in the bribery scandal, who has been summoned to testify before the courts this Thursday, the 2nd of January.
