The rumors regarding the government’s intentions to legally restrict strikes have prompted SYRIZA to prepare for a major clash with the government with the general strike on the 20th of February being at the focus. SYRIZA MP D. Stratoulis commented that “this strike can and must be the start of a new circle of victories that will defeat the destructive memorandum policies that the government has been serving, while paving the way for anti-memorandum progressive developments in our country”.
It appears that SYRIZA’s intent is to preserve and support the farmers’ front, despite not having that much on an impact. Mr. Tsipras will emphasize his differences with Mr. Samaras, despite intraparty doubts regarding the tactic. The impression of a stable party, they maintain, does not necessarily mean that SYRIZA can overthrow the government.
Regarding the rumored changes in the laws regarding strikes, Mr. Stratoulis spoke of an “absolutist decline”, adding that the rumored return of the “strike-defeating” lockout law is another blow against the constitutionally-protected right to unionize and strike .
