The General Secretary of Public Revenue H. Theoharis will be meeting with the management of 36 of Attica’s largest tax offices this week. Mr. Theoharis will give them instructions for auctioning property, checking bank accounts of debtors, informing beneficiaries and heirs and taking advantage of available laws regarding the collection of outstanding debts.

The State estimates that there are approximately 56.7 billion euros of outstanding debts, of which it intends to collect 1.4 billion this year, provided the Ministry can reduce the rate of debtors increasing. The tax offices are expected to contact debtors over the phone, while searching for co-debtors to cover the debts.

Should these interventions have no effect Mr. Theoharis will suggest harsher indiscriminate methods of collecting to be implemented, relating to the debt’s size and age. The tax offices will then prioritize debt collection, instead of suspending the limitation period.
