The Ministry of Education’s decision to introduce lax criteria for university transfers has caused great panic in most universities across the country, as students are rushing to submit their applications.

Students in regional universities in particular are requesting transfers to more central institutions in Athens and Thessaloniki, with some Rectors telling To Vima that many departments will essentially disappear over night. The Democritus University of Thrace has revealed that 60% of all freshmen have requested a transfer, with the rate exploding to 80% in the law school.

Similarly, representatives from the University of the Aegean warn that about half of its students have requested transfers. The University of Patra notes that transfers have been requested in 12 of its 24 departments, but the university will likely receive many students transferring over from other regional universities.

The Minister of Education Andreas Loverdos will meet with the Rectors of the universities at 10am on Tuesday in order to discuss the problems and attempt to find a solution. The Ministry will have a clear idea about transfers later in the week, when students will have completed registration and filed transfer requests.
